171.✓Japan–Go through Tokyo’s ‘yokocho’.

Intro
Why is this on my list.

Sitting in a dimly lit corner of Tokyo, I found myself wandering into the world of izakayas—those tiny, tucked-away bar streets that feel like stepping into another era. They’re not quite party streets, not filled with thundering music or flashing neon, but rather places where people gather to share a few quiet drinks, laughter, and smoky plates of grilled food. Some bars are rowdy, spilling out with raucous chatter and clinking glasses, but I kept to the calmer ones, where the glow of lanterns cast a soft light on the wooden walls and the air carried the mouthwatering scent of sizzling skewers.

Did I spend too much money drinking and eating grilled meats? Absolutely. Do I regret it? Not in the slightest. Every bite of smoky yakitori and every sip of crisp sake felt worth it, as though the whole evening was a celebration of simply being there. Perhaps a part of me wishes I had gone to one of the livelier bars, just to taste that wilder side of the street—but then again, the quiet charm of the places I chose suited me perfectly.

I’m happy to cross this one off my bucket list, but more than that, I’m grateful I had the chance to experience it for myself. These little bar-lined alleyways are famous for a reason—they hold the spirit of Tokyo nights, a mix of warmth, history, and fleeting connections. And now, that spirit is something I’ll always carry with me.
