348.✓Indonesia– Desolate temple in the Pura Besakih
By Dane Garner
Intro
Why is this on my list.

Pura Besakih isn’t just a temple—it’s a kingdom of stone clinging to the side of a mountain, high enough that it feels like it’s breaking through the clouds themselves. The drive up is half the experience: winding roads, jungle pressing in close, the sudden glimpses of mist and altitude that tell you you’re about to step into something ancient and untouchable.

For years, this place lived in my imagination. I’d seen the photographs—the National Geographic spreads, the travel posters, the cliché “bucket list” shots—and I always wondered if it would live up to the hype. Spoiler: it does. Walking through its gates, with those soaring split gateways cut from black volcanic stone, feels like walking into another world. The shrines are wrapped in cloth, offerings laid carefully at their base. This isn’t some sterile ruin roped off for tourists—it’s alive. People still pray here, still sweep the steps, still light incense to carry their words into the sky.

And then there are the details. The intricate carvings that tell stories older than most countries. The temple roofs layered with coconut husks, each one weathered by years of rain and sun, looking both fragile and eternal at the same time.

Of course, no place this ancient and wild is without its hazards. In this case: massive, nightmare-inducing spiders that lurk in the corners, reminding you that paradise always comes with a price. But even with eight-legged monsters hanging overhead, it’s impossible not to be floored by the place.

Pura Besakih isn’t just beautiful—it’s humbling. It makes you feel small in the best possible way, standing at the edge of the world, where stone meets sky and faith has kept watch for centuries.
