Why is this on my list.

248.✓Greece– Go to Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

So the reason this is on my bucket list is that it’s one of the oldest churches in Greece, a place that has surprise links to Catholicism, and actual ties to the disciples of Christ.

I was very lucky to be able to go to this church and enjoy this little date with Rachael. It is in the center of Athens and is surrounded by boutique shops, which I found quite funny.

The reason that there are no photos is that they plainly asked me not to take photos inside the church. I think that is important as I am very respectful around the society that I am living in, and they graciously adopted me into their culture so I decided that if any place doesn’t let me take photos I will not take the photos.

I did take some photos outside but that’s about it, so I will do my best to describe the inside!

The story.

Me and Rachael were wandering through the center of the city, at the crossroads between the Parliament building where the dutiful guards stand watch just like in Buckingham Palace, and the town square where people hawk and sell their wares even to this day.

We were looking for a specific church, and even though we don’t believe in this sort of thing it Is quite beautiful and interesting to see ancient buildings, architecture, and art. Eventually, we know where we’re going because we walked past it one day before, so we sit down on the ledge outside and finish eating our ice cream while chatting.

I help a couple take photos in front of the church while Rachael giggles to herself about me pretending to be a photographer. Eventually, those guys leave and I quickly finish my ice cream. We decide to take the photos and go through the church – it looks incredibly old, all the buildings surrounding it towers over it but you can definitely tell the age of this building just through the simple look of it. It looks as if it’s from Game of Thrones.

We take a bunch of photos outside the church, me smiling and doing funny poses. We also get some photos of the beautiful stonework and the murals created from beautiful shiny stones. I realized that I don’t like to take so many photos in front of it, so I quickly pocket my camera and walk through the threshold of the church. The change feels like we stepped into a 16th-century era – it’s cool with few windows, and the ones here are decorated with stained glass. The smell of burning incense overtakes us, and the sweet pungent smell reminded me of temples that I saw in China. Eventually, we started wandering through, looking at the beautiful artwork with all it’s all old paintings. The walls themselves look old, even the person sitting in the chair watching on looks old! The flickering lights of the candle offerings danced on the ancient marble floor.

It was a very quick trip through the building as it was quite small, but the beauty still overtook me. We looked up to the domed roof and see a tattered vision of Jesus… I can only describe how beautiful it looks as if it’s been worn by thousands of years of when dust and neglect, but truly you can still see those piercing eyes looking at us, wishing us to repent. Eventually, I bow and say thank you to the person watching over us, and I and Rachael go about our day.

It was a quick thing on the bucket list but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t leave a mark, no matter how small it is still an experience. I hope you guys enjoyed this post and I hope you are able to see the beauty within your surroundings. Thank you so much for reading, I love you. Remember to follow your dreams in trying to cross things off your own bucket list.
