254.✓Greece–Central Municipal Athens Market

The reason that this is on my bucket list is very simple – to go to a market where you can get meat, vegetables, and other confectioneries is the beating heart of a city.

It is where you go when you want to see all the people and all the classes mixing, from the poor to the rich, and especially my favorite kind of person… the restaurant owner. I do suggest that if you have time traveling to any city to drop by a market and pick up some food.

The story.

It is early in the morning as Rachael  And I wander in the city. We are a little bit lost and we’re trying to find our way but isn’t that most of life? We are trying to look for the municipal market of Athens where you can buy fresh meat, fish, fruit, and vegetables. This market is one of those places where you can see a true mix of society – the young, old, rich, poor, crazy, and even tourists.

Eventually, we make it to the market and the first thing we see is a vast high faulted building, and on either side, people are selling fish and meat.

For me, this is a true sign of beauty, where you can buy fresh food for your daily meals in Athens. The men and women selling the food are yelling, trying to out-match each-others deals, and you can smell the salty brine of the ocean waft through the building. It’s an amazing experience and I’m getting more and more excited as we’re walking through. The building itself looks incredibly old, just like most of the people selling the fish and the meat here.

Eventually, after a couple of minutes, we’ve passed through the whole fish and meat market. I try really hard not to buy meat because our hostel’s kitchen is closed due to Covid-19 which makes me quite sad. We make it to the section which I’m really excited about – the fruits and vegetables! When we get there I remember that my mom told me that I had to try the nectarines in Greece, so we wander around and find a nice old man selling a lot of different fruits… and one of them is nectarines. I’m super excited as we go crazy and buy some nectarines. They look absolutely amazing. We bought some and a bunch of grapes, and the whole cost comes to a grand total of €2.13.

That’s basically $5 Canadian for over 3 kilos of fruit! I feel very lucky, and we happily bounce out of the fruit market feeling like we struck a good deal because it’s so cheap. We later sit down in a nice cafe, order some coffee and try some of the fresh fruit. It is an excellent experience and I’m really happy I could do it. I really do hope you guys get a chance to go to your own market in your own city and see the beauty surrounding you there.

Thank you so much for reading my post, I hope you guys have a wonderful day,

I love you guys.
