30.✓Australia–See the Pitch Drop Experiment.

You may be asking yourself why is it on my bucket list to see the worlds slowest liquid?

Well there’s many reasons. I love science and the fact that this is the worlds longest experiment it is really interesting too, its actually one of the main reasons I want to Brisbane.

The story.

It’s pretty late in the morning as I’m walking on to the University of Queensland campus. I see well-dressed young people going about their day, everybody seems so well put together and smart and here is this random backpacker walking around looking at this building like it is Hogwarts. It’s beautiful here with its incredibly old buildings where people have been learning for a very long time. I walked around for a couple of minutes just looking at the beautiful grass, the architecture of the old granite buildings, and I passed one that looks incredibly interesting – it looks like it’s from 100 years in the future. It turns out to be a library and a gallery! I pop in and enjoy the air con because it so fucking hot and I off-handedly ask a beautiful girl where the pitch experiment is. She tilts her head at me and says “what’s that?”. I explain to her its the worlds longest experiment, it’s been going on for 100 years and it’s in this university. She blushes and confesses that she has no idea. I go to another person and ask the same thing – they reacted the same. I think I to myself shit I’ve gone to the wrong university but then eventually I ask a member of the faculty and she kindly points me in the direction of a building about 50 feet away.

I smile and thank her and I walk in; its just sitting there literally gathering dust with the WebCam facing it. There’s some information about the history and I look at it, smile and take photos with the intention of making my first ever video, but I feel abit awkward. That’s okay though as I look over and notice there is an old gentleman sitting next to what looks like a little museum, so I walk over and look at the glass – I see there is a door and it says “open” so I walk in the strike up a conversation with him. He is incredibly smart and points me in the direction of all these weird different artifacts from science experiments. Ariel from the Little Mermaid would be proud! I look over and there is an old computer from the ’70s which looks like it was probably the first computer to have Internet. We also chat to a professor about what he does and our different lives, it’s a beautiful moment. When I go I shake his hand and tell him I have to leave… I’m kind of sad I feel like I could talk to him for ever just asking him questions, I wish I could gain all of his knowledge, but beforr I leave I take a couple of last photos.

The main reason that I like this picture is it really does show how fluid dynamics work over time. Things that don’t look like they’re moving but they are, or like a timelapse video of a rose.
