603.✓United Kingdom–The Ruins of St. Dunstan-in-the-East

I do have a true love for anything historical and an old church that got bombed in a great war that was just decided to be left, how could you not love something like that. The reason it’s on my bucket list a simple – remembrance.

The story.

Me and Rachael are walking through the narrow streets of London, people bumping into us as we’re just looking around and enjoying the beautiful architecture.

We just passed the huge monument for the Great Fire of London and as we cross we see a teacher talking to a small class about the fire. We hear the teacher yell as they try to cut through the kids chattering and laughter – “The top of that memorial is how high the fire was!” Damn. I think to myself that would be insane to see the fire engulfing the whole city and it is a point of London history, just like the place we were looking for. Saint Dunstan’s in the East is a bombed out old church that was built in 1100.

Now that is fucking old – older than Canada by far! At least European Canada and just like the rest of this part of the city this church was also burned when it was rebuilt, and then it was bombed during World War II. God what a lucky church but it’s something that I’ve wanted to see on my bucket list for a while now. Just the idea of seeing the church in the middle of skyscrapers in cities; it’s within spitting distance from one of the ugly skyscrapers in London, the Walkie-Talkie, but it also looks as if the earth itself is trying to reclaim it.

Back to the moment – I’ve had me and Rachael walking through the streets looking for this church. Clouds blow over the city and it starts getting a little chilly so me and Rachael huddle a little closer together as we walk through the streets and as we’re doing that we hang a left, right another left and we end out at a beautiful decrepit church. The architect is mine and Rachael’s hero Sir Christopher Wren. The sypre is almost all that’s left after all this age. To find snarled vines around the broken windows I find to be a beautiful testament to how strong time is; even though we’re surrounded by all the skyscrapers and buildings you can still catch glimpses of the past. I can imagine the whistling of those bombs from the Blitz that made this church a memorial. Granted it is very sad that this church was destroyed but it does lend some beauty to the surrounding area. I’m not one for huge towering skyscrapers that shine the sun like a beacon as I prefer for old buildings that have a story.

Me and Rachael do an impromptu photo shoot as I talk about how this is on my bucket list. Then we sit down on this random bench holding each other’s hands and just enjoy the noise of the birds whistling as they pass. It’s so beautiful. Eventually we decide it was time to move on and see what else we can find. We start walking out and we see a cute little plaque and read it but after a couple minutes my ADHD hits and I start pulling Rachael away on to another adventure. What a fun life we live!

I keep thinking to myself about all of these old beautiful things with such a young beautiful woman.

I love you all and thank you for indulging me on the short little post!
