665.✓Eat classic sausage roll from Greg’s.

You may be asking why this is on my bucket list, as it’s a pastry filled with delicious meat. It’s a simple one, its a staple food and staple fast food chain. Its about as British as it gets.

The story.

It’s a big day and Rachael and I are making our way through central London from the Monument to commemorate the engulfing fires of London in 1666 all the way across to the Ye Old Cheshire Cheese pub (Post to be done about that soon).

I’m feeling a little peckish but I want to cross something off my list and when we walk past a shop the delicious smell of coffee and baked goods engulf us, and the blue sign says Gregg’s. I already knew about it and I knew it was on my bucket list so I ask Rachael if we could go and she agreed, so off we went.

Now I can hear you asking “what’s Gregg’s?” It is a bakery chain that was started in 1939; John greggs is a smart guy from NewCastle who realized that people who wanted to eat food on the go didn’t wanna spend much money on it.

There’s a lot of things you can get in Gregg’s including sandwiches, soup, coffee and all that fun jazz but the go to for me and a lot of people is awesome – they’re famous for this beautiful sausage roll, meat wrapped in Filo pastry which crunchy, soft and warm just like what I expected it to taste like.

But I digress – me and Rachael are standing in line and I’m looking left and right and taking in all the smells. Eventually after a small family with kids that are crying waiting for some food and a well-dressed worker standing in line tapping his feet as if he’s in a rush to get nowhere finishes ordering it’s me and Rachael’s turn. I look and see that there is a huge glass case where they show off all of their beautiful food and I push my nose against it like a little kid looking at the gorillas in the zoo, hoping to see something interesting.

No shock – there are no sausage rolls! I don’t know what else I can do or how I could cross thus off without that but one of the back workers comes out of the swinging door with a fresh batch. I thank my lucky stars that they’re on top of that.

We order a couple of sausage rolls which is just a couple of pounds and get these paper bags filled with warm deliciousness. We quickly scamper to our seats and sit down. I rip open the paper like a ravenous wolf trying to find her warm goodness that has befallen me. I see that it is truly freshly made as the steam is coming off of it and after that I know what to do and took a huge bite and goddamnit it’s delicious. A huge beautiful mixture of different spices, how can you not love something so delicious. It’s awesome!

It doesn’t have gold wrapping or truffle oil or any of that stupid shit. Its just good food to fill you up you can’t go wrong. This is why I love travelling, finding these delicious dishes that is about as normal as a Timmys double double and 10 timbits.

After a couple of big bites it’s gone, sadly it’s not that much at least to a hungry person but it filled me up and it made me ready to cross more things off my bucket list.

Me and Rachael get up, cleaned off the table and threw away the paper, and went on our way. Just as quickly as we went in we left but thats ok, it’s like a little pitt stop, a place to stop and get some food and continue on our journey. I hope you guys enjoy your journey and that you continue on it. I hope you enjoyed the post!
