672.✓UK–Make a call from a Red Telephone Box.

Such an iconic thing how could you not want to cross this off your bucket list, like the London Eye or the leaning tower of Pisa.

The story.
As a kid I’ve always seen photos of the red telephone boxes and wondered what they were, and what makes them so special. I am grown up now and in a lot of ways I’m still asking that question but in a different way, as in this age of technology you can get all of the worlds information sent to you in a matter of seconds. You can call anybody at anytime for any reason and it’s cheap, at least in London… in Canada its extortionately expensive. Why would they have these telephone boxes… who needs them?
After living here I’ve gained an appreciation and a fondness for them, it’s like seeing the Calgary Tower or the mountains. It’s something that you see every day and it’s just in the background. You walk past one here and there, sometimes they’re black but red most of the time. There’s a lot of graffiti on them but they’re interesting in there, it just shows a part of the history of London, something you don’t see anymore. Sometimes its just storage.
I even saw one that had a cupcake vending machine. There’s even one that is a café, a fucking Café where you can get a coffee and read in a telephone box. You better bet your bottom dollar that I’m going to do that. But I did cross it off trying to make a call.
Me and Rachael were wandering through the small tiny cobblestone streets of London listening to people from all around the world chatting. Some people were taking photos of themselves. It’s actually quite beautiful and then from there we stumbled upon yet again two or three red telephone boxes standing tall and proud with a little crown emblem on the top and it occurred to me I never tried to make a call in one. So I quickly hand Rachael my camera and ask her to take a couple photos. She rolls her eyes and gives me a giggle. I quickly open the door and it creeks as if it was an old man wishing not to move from yesterday because his arthritis is acting up. I pick up the receiver as Rachael takes a couple of photos of me and then hop back out and we go about your day looking for the Twinings tea shop.
As I was taking the photos it made me realize you have to appreciate the symbols that you have around you that make you think of your country, like the Maple leaf or the Rocky Mountains, we’re lucky to have them so close to us. So next time you’re in Canada in the fall and all those leaves are falling around you look around and realize how lucky you are, and that goes with every country. We’re all lucky to be alive and we’re all lucky to enjoy the world we have. I love you all and I hope you enjoy this post. Ps. I tried to make a call and it didn’t go through just my luck for it not to work but it was still interesting.
I was surrounded by graffiti and cobwebs and there’s a small’s faint smell of piss… I don’t wanna know what goes on in these telephone boxes.
