408.✓France–Drink French Wine in France.

Why is this on my list.
 How could you not want to drink wine in France! There are so many great countries with great wines, like Italy, America and Argentina, but it’s all about France; it’s a part of the culture and part of the history to drink wine with friends, all I need is some nice cheese and I’m golden.  
The story.

This one has been on my bucket list for many years and I’m very happy how I crossed it off.

Me and Rachael got a chance to volunteer in the south of France, overlooking a mountain, and even on some beautiful mornings you could see across the south of France to the ocean, so needless to say it is probably one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been in my life.

You could hear the birds chirping each morning and the sound of the palm trees swaying back-and-forth; it’s absolutely beautiful on every single level. 

Me and Rachael thought it was a perfect time to cross off “drink a bottle of wine in France”. Luckily enough we got a delicious cheap bottle of wine – not going to lie, it wasn’t that hard to find! You could probably find a good bottle of wine in every shop, as it’s what France is known for.

I’ll remember that night for very long time, me and Rachael sitting side by side as the sun was setting sitting and cracked open a bottle of wine, looking out upon the valley with its beautiful reds, oranges and purples shining bright. It’s not cold as we crack open the wine and pour ourselves a glass, then we cuddle next to each other and give each other a cheeky little kiss, her warm against me.

Taking a sip of wine, it’s sweet just like Rachael and I feel very lucky. I think about the complexities of my life and how I got here and then I thought about a famous lecture from Richard Feynman:

“A poet once said, “The whole universe is in a glass of wine.” We will probably never know in what sense he meant that, for poets do not write to be understood. But it is true that if we look at a glass of wine closely enough, we see the entire universe. These are the things of physics: the twisting liquid which evaporates depending on the wind and weather, the reflections in the glass, and our imagination adds the atoms. The glass is a distillation of the earth’s rocks, and in its composition we see the secrets of the universe’s age, and the evolution of stars. What strange array of chemicals are in the wine? How did they come to be? There are the ferments, the enzymes, the substrates, and the products. There in wine is found the great generalization: all life is fermentation. Nobody can discover the chemistry of wine without discovering, as did Louis Pasteur, the cause of much disease. How vivid is the claret, pressing its existence into the consciousness that watches it! If our small minds, for some convenience, divide this glass of wine, this universe, into parts—physics, biology, geology, astronomy, psychology, and so on—remember that nature does not know it! So let us put it all back together, not forgetting ultimately what it is for. Let it give us one more final pleasure: drink it and forget it all!”

I find it quite beautiful but at this moment all I was thinking about was the love I have next to me and the beautiful wine I’m drinking. I’m very lucky to have that and I’m very lucky to have her in my life. We cuddle up a little bit more chat and about life, making each other laugh and slowly but surely, we drink that whole bottle together and we are feeling pretty good. From there we cleaned up our mess. The sun by this time has long since set and we went to bed feeling lucky it for it.

When you Google “French wine” the amount of information that comes up is insane. When I do the history of something, I try to get a basic idea of what’s going on and just go from there. I feel that if I was to delve deep into this I will spend my whole life learning about it. But I found some interesting facts I thought I’d share with you guys. Roughly 7-8 billion bottles of wine are produced each year in France. To put that in perspective that’s 39 million glasses of wine! That is more than enough to give each Canadian a glass of wine each.

Champagne was invented by a clergyman.

The most expensive bottles of wine in France is Domaine de la romanee-conti grand cru pinot noir – one bottle cost roughly $27,798.
